What a great turnout of members with big hearts and energy for the recent pre-season working bee.

The yard is now looking very well kept and is ready for an exciting season ahead.

Thank you to all our members who prepared morning tea and all who attended, giving up their Sunday morning.

Opening Night Celebrations

What a wonderful evening full of laughter, food, wine and catching up with friends. The best way to start the new season of 2026-27. Well done to the brave new members who came along to meet so many new faces; it was lovely to meet you.

Our season was opened by Scott Watson, who is on the Victorian Regional Advisory Committee for Australian Sailing. He is also a keen sailor and member of McCrae Yacht Club, just over the hill.

Thank you to our local musicians for the music; we were certainly treated to the perfect sunset and calm waters viewed from our clubhouse.

What a way to start the season; now bring on more fun and adventure for the summer months to come.

Training Courses OPEN

  • NEW November learn-to-sail course is open now. This is for adults and youth together. A great way to learn to sail with your children. Four Saturday mornings in November. Tell your family and friends about it and how to get involved.
  • December courses are now OPEN, a NEW Start Cat Sailing course is running, along with Start Sailing 1 & 2

Membership and Yard Space

Membership renewals are due now. Boat owners are reminded that if fees have not been paid, you need to remove your boat from the yard. Yard space is limited, and yachts that have been paid for by current financial members and are sailed are given preference for this space. This is detailed in the membership agreement. Unfortunately, with an enthusiastic club and limited Yard area, we are not able to offer the SYC Boat Yard as a storage facility for Yachts.

Learn to windsurf

So you want that thrill of powering over the water on a windsurfer? We can get you there.

We are asking for expressions of interest in a learn-to-windsurf course. We hope to run a course in November on Sunday mornings. Let us know if you are keen asap, and we will contact you soon.

Crew Notice Board

Did you know there is a crew notice board on our website?

We want to do everything possible for you to get out on the water and find that perfect crew that will work for you. Under the Sailing tab, Racing, we have many green buttons that you can follow for more information. One happens to be called Crew Noticeboard.

Please use this resource and have a great time on the water.

Child Safety at SYC

SYC is a Child Safe organisation. As SYC Members, we are all expected to help protect and promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people at our Club.

Whenever we’re interacting with youth members, whether in the Clubhouse, out on the water, in the yard, on social media or via email or messages, we all have a shared responsibility to keep our youth members safe and well

- both physically and emotionally -

and to ensure they’re supported, included, treated with respect and protected from harm.

Our Child Safety Code of Conduct gives clear guidance on the behaviour expected of us when interacting with youth members. It identifies behaviours that are unacceptable and tells us what to do if we have a concern about child safety.

You can find copies of all our Child Safety policy documents on our website and on Club noticeboards.

If you have any feedback or questions about Child Safety, please speak to our SYC Child Safety Officers, Trish Low and Emma Morris.

Time is running out to choose your time slot.

Self-nomination for race day duty is open until the end of October. After this date, if you have not signed up, all sailors will be allocated 2 or more on the roster.

So sign up now yourself!

We ask all members aged 15 and under to be with their parent or Guardian while doing their volunteering.

Hot tip: If you are seeing last year's roster instead of this season when you follow the link, close the tab completely and follow the link again.

Voluntering

It turns out that giving your time to the club is the ultimate wellness trick—delivering a dose of purpose, a break from daily stress, and a great excuse to hang out with great people. As the largest off-the-beach club in Victoria, run solely by volunteers, we need to share the load.

Currently, we are looking for 2 positions

  • Club Maintenance Coordinator - leading a team to get things done around the club.
  • Kitchen Coordinator - managing equipment and replenishing small stock items

Please phone or email Simon Morris for further info or questions.   0425 734 922  commodore@somersyachtclub.com.au

If you would like to offer your time or skills in other areas, please follow the link at the bottom: 'Have something to say?'  or contact Simon Morris
