Friday Night Social @ 6 with a difference. 

On Friday July 17th, an enthusiastic crowd of SYC folks gathered to fend off the winter chill with the warmth of friendship and some tasty gluhwein served by Libby Moore. Keith Moore and Jeff Wall provided some impromptu music to the backdrop of this winter gathering, and a good time was had by all.

Winter Trivia Bonanza! 

A fun night was had by about 70 participants in this year’s Winter Trivia event.

Once again, our respected Quizmaster David Goble was ably assisted by his barrel girls Sue & Julie and wingman Andrew. Thank you to bar volunteers Robyn and David.

Team Barnacles won the chocolates, closely followed by gardening enthusiasts The Green Thumbs. Strangely, the most difficult question on the night was “What is the name of the new centrist political party formed by two Australian independent MP’s?”

It was fabulous to have more youngsters participate this year, and we enjoyed the company of many Somers community members. Comments post-event included – “we may have been a bit unruly, hope we get to come here again!”“Good fun – we always learn something new” to “I’ll have what she’s having”!

Those random bits of information that are food for thought.

Why do ships use PORT and STARBOARD instead of left and right?

Port and starboard are fixed locations on a vessel and are not affected by its orientation. When looking forward, towards the bow of the vessel, the left is Port and the right is Starboard. 

In the early days of boating, before ships had rudders on their centerlines, boats were controlled using a steering oar. Most sailors were right-handed, so the steering oar was placed over or through the right side of the stern. Sailors began calling the right side the steering side, which soon became "starboard" by combining two Old English words: stéor (meaning "steer") and bord (meaning "the side of a boat").

As the size of boats grew, so did the steering oar, making it much easier to tie a boat up to a dock on the side opposite the oar. This side became known as larboard, or "the loading side." Over time, larboard—too easily confused with starboard—was replaced with port. After all, this was the side that faced the port, allowing supplies to be ported aboard by porters.

The Origin Story: How long have you been a part of the crew, and what was the exact moment you realised you had to join and why?         When I was 36 years old, I worked with 2 sailors & every Monday morning at smoko they would be telling me all the great things that happened at sailing at the weekend. One guy was from Cowes Yacht Club and the other from Somers. This was Max Dawson. I loved hearing their stories; it sounded so great that I just had to try it. I had no experience; I was just given a book to read and gave it a go. I started on a single-handed monohull, a Sabre. Once I learnt, the whole family all got involved as they grew up. I soon moved on to a paper tiger and had three different ones in my time sailing. I was running the powerboats as Rear Commodore and trying to sail, but found it a bit much, so gave up the sailing side and kept involved in the club from the patrol boat side, and in the tower.

The Double Life: When you are not hanging out at the club, what secret hobbies or projects consume your time? Where do I start!! Being retired is great.           Fishing, vintage cars, drinking coffee & hanging around with all my friends from Probus & Somers.

The Highlight Reel: Tell us about one unforgettable, hilarious, or legendary moment you’ve experienced here.            When the sea got so close to the clubhouse & we had to build a new yard at the rear & build a rock wall across the front.

The Time Capsule: Fast forward 5 years—what is the wildest or biggest thing you hope the club achieves?              That the club get elected Yacht Club of the Year again
