School Teams Sailing Nationals

Each year the top school sailing teams for around Australia compete at the team’s sailing nationals.

Sandy Bay, Tasmania

This year, the nationals were held in Sandy Bay, Tasmania. Four members of Somers Yacht Club represented their schools at the event: Leona Twist from Peninsula Grammar, Lucy and Marvis Laverty from Woodleigh and me, Eli Crabb from Brighton Grammar.

School Teams Sailing

Fast-paced form of sailing where schools compete against each other in Pacers. Each team has six sailors sailing in three boats.

Skills +

Sailors need to communicate with their teammates, make quick decisions and keep track of the other teams throughout the race.

Teams

Unlike normal fleet racing, where the aim is simply to finish ahead of as many boats as possible, teams sailing is all about teamwork, tactics and strategy.

Team: Three boats , Six Crew

Sailors work together across all three boats to get the best overall result for their team. This can involve helping a teammate get ahead, blocking an opposition boat or making a tactical move during the race.

The weather - Brrrr!

The weather in Tasmania was something to remember, with freezing temperatures and plenty of wind making for some challenging conditions on the water.

Great Experience !

Despite the cold, it was a great experience for the sailors, with the trip to Tasmania providing the chance to race in a new location, meet other sailors and compete against school teams from across the country.

Unfortunately, none of the Somers sailors made finals this year, however they were still great to watch. With 25+ kn of wind, boats were flying and tipping left and right into the icy Derwent River.

Overall, the Nationals were a great experience both on and off the water, with some competitive racing in the Pacers and plenty to take away from the event.

Your segment to meet the crew under the spotlight

The Origin Story: How long have you been a part of the crew, and what was the exact moment you realised you had to join and why?        

I had been away from sailing for a while, always saying that one day I would return to what I loved.

After watching my mother’s life change so quickly through cancer, my outlook on life changed too. I realised you can’t take anything with you when you die, only the memories you make and the people you share them with. Time waits for no one.

When I discovered the strong Hobie fleet at Somers in 2019, I jumped in the car and came to visit a place I had never heard of before. From the moment I arrived, Simon and Emma welcomed me, introduced me around, and made me feel at home.

The people, the atmosphere and the Hobie fleet had me hooked straight away. What I didn’t realise was that these people would become some of my closest friends and, in many ways, my family.

I will always be grateful to Somers for welcoming me, supporting me through a difficult time, and giving me somewhere to belong. We have since moved to the area and there's no other place we'd rather be than sailing at Somers.

Oh, that guy: What are you best known for around the club?        

Well, totally obsessed with Hobie Cats of course and probably a bit of Guitar and Music here and there.

The Double Life: When you are not hanging out at the club, what secret hobbies or projects consume your time? 

I'm lucky enough to make music for my job, but love flight simming and getting out on my Harley exploring what the peninsula has to offer and currently training for The Melbourne Marathon.

The Highlight Reel: Tell us about one unforgettable, hilarious, or legendary moment you’ve experienced here.            

Besides getting married on the deck to my beautiful wife, probably winning the club championship with Arija has been the highlight. Only a couple of points separated us from Matt Stone, it was the final race and if he beat us he would win. Luckily Matt put it in the drink and we sailed past to victory. I think they call it a Bradbury moment?

The Time Capsule: Fast forward 5 years—what is the wildest or biggest thing you hope the club achieves?              

I hope the club continues to grow and especially the Hobie Fleet. I'd love to see the next generation become strong and have a huge junior fleet well into the future. I'd love to see the Hobie Worlds at the club but that might be wishful thinking.

The Soundtrack: If our club had a theme song, what would it be?

The Superpower: If you could bring one fictional character into the club, who would you recruit?  

Probably Yoda from Star Wars, would love to have a beer with him after sailing.

The MVP: Who is another club member who deserves a shout-out right now, and why?         

That's a hard question as there are so many wonderful people, but I would have to say Nigel. He is just amazing with everything he does for the club but also for our family. He is motivational, kind and I love racing against him!
