Australian Sailing Summit

The Victorian 2026 Sailing Summit was held last month at Parklands Yacht Club with over 100 people attending and 41 clubs and associations represented. The room reflected the strength of our volunteer culture within sailing.

Our own Commodore Simon Morris, was asked to speak on a Panel, sharing practical examples and success stories of how our club is attracting participants, engaging volunteers and creating welcoming sailing communities.

A youth Panel also shared their insights and valuable perspectives on what young people are looking for in sailing clubs today. A clear message emerged that clubs need to embrace the future generations and actively involve young people in decision-making, leadership opportunities and club activities if they are to successfully attract and retain the next generation.

We heard about SailLAB, a new initiative available for schools and also looked forward as a group to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and how sailing will be represented.

Overall, a great day was had with like-minded people.

Karaoke Stars Unleashed!

The winter chill officially arrived, but things were sizzling inside the clubhouse!

Over the June long weekend, our legendary members rolled up their sleeves and took over the kitchen, whipping up a massive batch of crowd-pleasing Chicken Parmas, chips and salad. They served up a truly superb feast for 50 incredibly hungry people!

Once bellies were full, the real magic happened. The karaoke machine fired up, and boy, did some hidden talents (and complete surprises!) come out of the closet! It was a night packed with laughs, epic high notes, and unforgettable moments.

We had so much fun that we are already plotting the next one. Get ready, because we are thinking of making this a regular gig for the season ahead!

The Origin Story: How long have you been a part of the crew, and what was the exact moment you realized you had to join and why?

I have been a member of SYC since 2020 when I joined with my family.  I started sailing school in the 2020/2021 season(?). I was 9 years old.  My mum thought I was ready to learn sailing because I was always in the water.  I think I was ready to learn sailing because I liked being out far and going fast.

Oh, that guy: What are you best known for around the club?

I think I’m best known for going out in 25kn+ winds and sailing instructing.

The Double Life: When you are not hanging out at the club, what secret hobbies or projects consume your time?

In my spare time, I go surfing, mountain biking and if there is ever any snow, snowboarding.

The Highlight Reel: Tell us about one unforgettable, hilarious, or legendary moment you’ve experienced here.

Snapping a side stay with Henry on my dragoon in 25-30kn is pretty memorable.

The Time Capsule: Fast forward 5 years—what is the wildest or biggest thing you hope the club achieves?

Being recognised as the best Hobie club in the world.

The Soundtrack: If our club had a theme song, what would it be?

Thrills by Spacey Jane.  Listen here

The Superpower: If you could bring one fictional character into the club, who would you recruit?

Bugs Bunny.

The MVP: Who is another club member who deserves a shout-out right now, and why?

Henry for finally buying new sails.
